10,000 suspects arrested over anti- foreigner violence by South Africa police


An official said on Monday, 10,000 suspect were arrested in an anti-crime operation by South Africa Police following that xenophobic violence.

The acting cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams told a press in Pertoria that 1,123 suspects were arrested for illegal stay in the country while others were accused of crimes such as illegal possession of firearms and ammunitions and drug trafficking.


The xenophobia was said to be targeting migrants in the country while the government said it was meant to rid the country of criminal elements.

6,781 suspects were screened and waiting deportation by the Police from April to July. 1,694 of the deportee suspect were linked to crimes. Moreover those linked to criminal issues, their deportation process will be suspended pending their appearances in court.



Williams said " If the suspects are found guilty , they will serve out their sentence and then deported to their home countries after release. In addition to what she has said foreigners that were displace during the xenophobic are back to their communities.
