Drunk naval rating shot tipper drivers but were neglected

An unidentified naval rating shot two tipper drivers were neglected by the naval authorities. It was reported three tippers workers who lived in Majidun, Ikorodu area of Lagos State, were shot by a rating drunken naval rating shot at them.

The victims were rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital,before beiing transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. It was learnt that the naval rating was celebrating his birthday at the time of the incident , he got drunken, pick up his gun and start shooting astray.

Timothy Danchaba and Abbas Bello who were the victims of the incident not properly treated well at the hospital before they were discharged from the hospital. Mr Timothy who narrated the incident said he had resumed work on Monday going about his daily work activities before been shot in the leg.



He said "I deal in sharp sand and granite at the Majidun Tipper Garage where the incident happened. Around 3pm, we started hearing gun reports, One of the bullets pierced through my leg and came out from the other side."

While Bello, said he was eating at a canteen in the park when he was hit by a bullet. He also said ,"At LUTH, a scan was run on my leg and by Friday, the doctors said the two of us were okay and we should be reporting to the hospital every Thursday."

One of the Victims brother , tried getting in touch with the naval authorities for proper medical and financial assistance but could not get through.

He said ,"We made effort to speak with the navy at Ikorodu, but we were chased out by on Taiwo and the CSO. "Timothy's bones have been broken due to the gunshot and it is unlikely he will be able to do anything meaningful for himself and his family for the next three months. It is a bad injury."

Femi Falana who is a Lagos based human rights lawyer, condemned will handle the case pro bono. He said,"The murderous attack on the three unarmed citizens by the naval rating cannot be tolerated in a civilized society. We have been briefed to take up the unprovoked assault on the tree gentlemen.

"Apart from demanding the suspect's trail for attempted murder, we shall sue the naval authorities and claim reparation for the victims of the gross human rights abuse. Having allowed the suspect to move around with a loaded rifle, the military authorities are vicariously liable for the negligence which occasioned the reckless shooting,".
